COUNTRY GUIDE NAMIBIA

Private jet charter and flights to Namibia

Namibia offers its visitors a unique African experience. The country's name comes from its oldest desert, the Namib, where rugged mountains, vast empty desert, towering red dunes and dead-tree valleys form an otherworldly landscape. At first glance it might seem surprising that Namibia sustains any life at all, but look closer and you’ll discover that it boasts some of the most interesting flora and fauna on Earth. In the northwest, Etosha National Park is a top safari destination. It’s dominated by the immense Etosha salt pan – a popular wildlife-viewing hotspot thanks to the water holes that punctuate its southern edge, where lion, rhino, elephant and gemsbok flock en masse during the dry season (June to November). It’s a privilege in Africa not to have to travel around to seek out wildlife, but simply wait and watch as the game comes to drink.

Namibia’s most photographed attractions lie in the south-eastern Namib-Naukluft National Park. Sossusvlei is its spectacular desert superstar; a large salt-and-clay pan surrounded by a sweep of burnt-orange sand that’s been sculpted by the wind into dunes almost 400 metres high, which is particularly snap-worthy at sunrise and sunset. This area is also where you’ll find white clay pan Dead Vlei (‘dead marsh’) where 900-year-old dead camel trees, blackened by the scorching sun, contrast against the stark white pans and rust-red dunes for a stunningly surreal scene. Although the Namib-Naukluft National Park isn’t a traditional safari destination, hyena, meerkat, gemsbok and aardwolf survive in this hyper-arid region.

Namibia’s Germanic style is perhaps most evident in Swakopmund, a coastal town with a sunny charm located at the edge of the Namib Desert. ‘Swakop’, as it’s affectionately known, is a popular holiday spot for both locals and tourists where you’ll find colonial buildings, German-style restaurants and Bavarian spires along palm-lined streets and seaside promenades.
