COUNTRY GUIDE CAMBODIA

Private jet charter and flights to Cambodia

Cambodia’s history and culture belie its small size. This heart-shaped nation, sandwiched between Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, was once the seat of the mighty Khmer Empire and the magnificent temples constructed during its reign remain the country’s most popular attraction. As the gateway to the incredible Temples of Angkor, Siem Reap in the northwest of the country is Cambodia’s tourist heart. This once-unassuming town now has a great choice of places to stay and an excellent foodie scene, perfect for travellers who use it as a springboard to explore the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Angkor Archaeological Park.

Angkor is one of the world’s foremost ancient sites and the largest religious complex on Earth. Angkor Wat is its deserved superstar – a vast 12th-century masterpiece with astoundingly intricate carvings and imposing lotus towers, all surrounded by a wide moat. It’s particularly impressive at sunset. Angkor’s ‘secondary’ temples are just as spectacular, including the sprawling Angkor Thom complex, which includes the Terrace of the Elephants and the Bayon Temple adorned with over 200 giant stone faces; and mysterious Ta Prohm, where jungle-clad ruins create a fascinating maze of entwined temple-trees that featured in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

Siem Reap also provides access to Tonlé Sap, a huge lake connected to the Mekong River. As well as a breeding ground for endangered water birds, Tonlé Sap is one of the best places to witness local Cambodian life, with several floating fishing villages made up of stilted houses, schools and even hospitals.

Cambodia’s laid-back capital, Phnom Penh, lies in the south of the country. A small city by Asia’s standards, it has a lively vibe, with bustling markets (the impressive French-influenced Central Market is one of our favourites) alongside cool rooftop bars and cosmopolitan cafés. In the evening, the riverfront – dominated by the Khmer roofs of the Royal Palace – is the place to be, when holidaymakers gather with a beer to watch the sun go down. For a luxury stay in Phnom Penh, there’s nowhere better for colonial grandeur than Raffles Hotel Le Royal.

Despite an urban atmosphere emerging in its cities, the effects of the horrific 1970s genocide can still be felt throughout the country – nowhere more so than 10 miles south of Phnom Penh in Cambodia’s Killing Fields, a must-visit for those looking to understand Cambodia’s history. From 1975-1979 the Khmer Rouge killed almost two million Cambodians, many of whom are buried in these mass graves.

Beyond Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, Cambodia remains largely unexplored by tourists and retains an irresistible charm that’s been lost by some of its Indochinese neighbours. The rural landscape is dotted with sleepy colonial towns, rice paddies and simple stilt houses. On the south coast, Sihanoukville is Cambodia’s premier beach destination, largely popular with backpackers for its white sands by day and lively bars by night. For a more luxurious beach escape, the stunning Vietnamese island of Phú Quốc lies offshore and is home to several big-name high-end hotels.

When chartering a flight to Cambodia, we recommend flying into Siem Reap International Airport or Phnom Penh International Airport, however there are plenty of other airports around the country. From Siem Reap and Phnom Penh there’s also easy air access into neighbouring Vietnam, Laos and Thailand to create a wider South-East Asian itinerary. Simply contact our team and we’ll arrange everything you need to charter a private jet to Cambodia.
