GULFSTREAM III

GULFSTREAM III

  • Passengers 13

The Gulfstream III (G-III) is a long-range, high-speed business jet that flies passengers in a large and luxurious cabin.

About this aircraft

  • The Gulfstream III was introduced in 1980 as an upgrade of the Gulfstream II.
  • The Gulfstream III’s large cabin can seat 12-13 people, depending on configuration. A further passenger can be seated in the enclosed lavatory if required.
  • Its long range means the Gulfstream III can complete transatlantic flights.
  • The baggage hold has space for around 14 suitcases and is accessible via the lavatory during a flight.
  • Gulfstream delivered more than 200 G-IIIs before production ceased in 1986.

Capable of transatlantic flights and able to fly coast-to-coast across the United States, the Gulfstream III was revolutionary in its heyday. Despite its age, it still offers a luxurious charter experience that rivals some modern-day competitors, and many models have been retrofitted to give the feeling of a much newer aircraft.

Interior design

The Gulfstream III’s stand-up cabin is large for a long-range heavy jet, even compared to newer aircraft. There are a variety of possible layouts that can seat up to 13 passengers. Onboard amenities include fully adjustable chairs and divans, an enclosed lavatory, a full-size galley and a large baggage compartment.

Below are some typical configurations found on a Gulfstream III.

Interesting facts to know before you fly

  • Gulfstream’s large, oval signature windows flood the cabin with natural light and are positioned so you can see the world below from the comfort of your seat.
  • Many G-IIIs have been retrofitted with modern interiors and avionics. Some also have hush kits, enabling them to land at airports with stringent noise regulations.

Technological features

The Gulfstream III is powered by two Rolls-Royce Spey Mark 511-8 engines. Inside, the flight deck features a dual Sperry ED-800 electronic flight instrumentation system coupled with a Sperry Primus 800 multifunctional display and a four-screen EFIS.

Standard equipment includes three Honeywell laser gyros (lighter and more reliable than mechanical gyros), a Sperry SPZ800 flight director system, a Global GNS 1000 FMS, and a Sperry Primus 800 colour weather radar.

History

The improved Gulfstream III was launched following Gulfstream's purchase of Grumman's GA aircraft lines in 1978. First flying in 1979, the G-III featured a number of upgrades on the preceding G-II, such as new avionics, greater wingspan, drag-reducing winglets, more fuel tankage and thus range, a reprofiled nose and a stretched fuselage.

Deliveries of the G-III began in late 1980. More than 200 were built until production ceased in 1986 as attention turned to the Gulfstream IV, a larger model with two quieter, more powerful and more fuel-efficient Rolls-Royce Tay turbofans.

Manufacturer

Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation is an American aircraft company based in Savannah, Georgia and a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Dynamics. The company originated in the late 1950s when Grumman Aircraft Engineering Co. developed a twin-turboprop business aircraft called the Grumman Gulfstream I (G-I) at its facilities in Bethpage, New York.

Gulfstream now designs, develops, manufactures, markets and services the latest business jet aircraft and has produced more than 2,000 aircraft since 1958.

Cost

A used Gulfstream III costs anywhere between $750,000 to $1.8 million (USD).
