The Bombardier Challenger 650 was introduced in 2015 as the ultimate development of the 600 family. The aircraft is an upgrade of the Challenger 605, featuring more powerful engines, extra executive seating, and larger galley appliances for faster meal preparation.

Interior design

The Challenger 650 boasts one of the widest cabins in its class and comes in two possible configurations: the Executive, which seats 11 passengers, or the nine-seat Globetrotter. Each features a forward club suite and an aft divan, adjacent to either a four-seat conference suite (Executive) or a two-seat lounge suite (Globetrotter). Both layouts also have a galley at the entrance and an enclosed lavatory in the rear.

Every aspect of the cabin has been carefully designed to maximise passenger comfort, from the large windows to fold-out tables and angled touch screens. The baggage compartment is accessible throughout the flight, making it easy to retrieve personal items whenever needed.

Technological features

The Challenger 650 is powered by two General Electric CF34-3B engines, each offering 8,729 pounds of thrust and using a combined 227 gallons per hour. In the cockpit, the Rockwell Collins Advanced avionics suite features four large displays and synthetic vision and MultiScan weather radar systems.

Passengers can seamlessly switch between entertainment and information using Bombardier's cabin management system, which can be accessed wirelessly via personal devices. Universal HDMI and USB ports enable a plug-and-play entertainment experience, while video conferencing, live streaming and even online gaming can be undertaken in-flight thanks to Ka-band high-speed internet connectivity.

History

The Challenger 650 was introduced in 2015 and is the latest aircraft in Bombardier’s popular family of business jets. The line began back in 1978 with the Challenger 600, followed by the Challenger 601 with added winglets and more powerful engines.

Next came the Challenger 604 with even better engines, greater fuel capacity and a new undercarriage and avionics. The Challenger 605 followed, boasting bigger windows, a new tailcone, upgraded avionics and 'electronic flight bag' capability.

The Challenger 650 improved on the 605 with a redesigned interior, Rockwell Collins ProLine 21 Advanced Flight Deck and a 5% increase in takeoff thrust.

Manufacturer

The company began with the acquisition of several established aviation companies, starting with Canadair in 1986 and followed by Short Brothers in 1989, Learjet in 1990 and Boeing subsidiary De Havilland Aircraft of Canada in 1992.
