It has been reported by media outlets that Turkey has made the wearing of face masks in all public places mandatory in three major cities following an increase in confirmed cases of Coronavirus.
The governors of Istanbul, Ankara and Bursa announced the new regulation late on Wednesday following a recommendation to do so by the country’s scientific advisory council. Masks are now compulsory in 47 out of 81 provinces.
The increase in confirmed infections follows the government authorising cafes, restaurants, gyms, parks, beaches and museums to reopen, lifting inter-city travel restrictions and easing orders for the elderly and very young to stay at home at the start of June.
The Minister of Health, Fahrettin Koca, announced that confirmed daily infections in Instanbul averaged 653 over the past month but reduced to 616 per day over the past three days. With over 15 million residents, Istanbul is Turkey’s most populated city, exceeding the capital, Ankara, where confirmed infections ranged between 127 and 177 per day but showed an upward trend over the past week.
