About the Six Nations
The Six Nations is the world’s oldest international rugby tournament, dating back to 1883 when it was called the Home Nations Championship and played between England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. Expanding over the years with the addition of France and Italy, the competition now comprises men’s, women’s and U20s annual tournaments.
Every national team plays one match against each of the other five, with home ground advantage alternating from one year to the next. The winner is decided on a bonus-point format, with teams awarded zero points for a loss, two for a draw, four for a win, one for scoring four or more tries in a match, and one for losing by seven points or less. Teams who achieve a grand slam by winning all of their games get an extra three points, ensuring they can’t be overtaken by another side collating several bonus points.
