About Goodwood Festival of Speed
Goodwood Festival of Speed was founded in 1993 by Duke of Richmond Charles Gordon-Lennox, in a bid to revive Chichester’s long association with British motor racing. Held on the 12,000-acre Goodwood Estate, the inaugural event attracted an unprecedented turnout of 25,000 fans and by 1996 the popular festival had grown into a three-day extravaganza.
Today, Goodwood draws crowds of 100,000 people each day. One of the main attractions is the chance to see motorcycles, helicopters, planes and race cars up-close and in action. Another is the festival’s famous hillclimb, which tests drivers and their vehicles to the limit with an elevation of 92.7 metres and an average gradient of 4.9%.
