CESSNA CITATION M2

CESSNA CITATION M2

  • Passengers 5

Upgrading on the Citation CJ1+ and Citation Mustang, the Citation M2 and subsequent M2 Gen2 model are ideal for cost-effective short- and mid-range charters.

About this aircraft

  • Out-performing the CJ1 and Citation Mustang in almost every category, the Cessna Citation M2 launched in 2011 and deliveries began in 2013.
  • The cabin is configured to seat four or five passengers, with a further seat available in the lavatory. An additional passenger can sit in the cockpit if the aircraft is owned, but this option isn’t available for charters.
  • With a 2,871 km range, the M2 can easily complete routes like London to Ibiza and New York to Atlanta.
  • There’s enough baggage space for around five suitcases.
  • The upgraded M2 Gen2 was announced in 2021 and delivered in 2022, with an improved cabin and better performance than its predecessor.

The M2 was designed as a modified version of the CJ1+ and Mustang with new interiors, engines and avionics. These qualities put the M2 and M2 Gen2 at the pinnacle of the light jet market, with a performance that rivals even the larger and more popular Citation CJ2+.

Interior design

The M2’s cabin features market-leading interior furnishing. It’s usually arranged in either a four or five-seat layout, with the former featuring a club formation separated by fold-away tables and the latter offering an extra seat facing the cabin door. A further seat can be made available in the lavatory at the rear, separated from the main cabin by a privacy curtain.

The M2 Gen2 offers enhanced cabin technology to boost productivity, such as wireless smartphone charging and USB ports at every seat. Upgraded seat tailoring, improved lighting and deeper cup holders make for a more comfortable flight, while the optional folding side-facing seat converts into extra cargo storage.

Interesting facts to learn before you fly

  • The Citation M2 is specifically designed to operate on short runways and access hard-to-reach locations.
  • FJ44 engines and lift-efficient winglets give the aircraft a faster climb speed than many rival light jets – including its closest competitor, the Embraer Phenom 100E.
  • The M2 can be operated by only one pilot and flies four passengers over 1,000 miles at a high-speed cruise.

Technological features

The Citation M2 is powered by a pair of FADEC-controlled Williams International FJ44-1AP-21 turbofan engines, each producing 1,965 lbs of thrust.

The jet’s Garmin G3000 avionics system centres on three LCD primary and multifunction displays and two infrared touch-screen control panels. Recorded data can be reviewed while the aircraft is grounded and even downloaded for analysis when away from the aircraft.

History

Cessna developed the Citation M2 in 2008 as an upgrade of the CJ1+ and Mustang. The jet was certified in 2013 with a new interior and improved engines and avionics. Over 250 were delivered until Cessna announced the upgraded M2 Gen2 in 2021.

Manufacturer

Cessna was founded in 1927 by Clyde Cessna and Victor Roos. It was originally called the Cessna-Roos Aircraft Company, but Roos’ name was dropped after he resigned just one month into the partnership and sold back his interest to Cessna.

Headquartered in Wichita, Kansas, the company specialised in producing small piston-powered planes and business jets. After becoming one of the world’s biggest general aviation producers, it was bought by General Dynamics in 1985 and by Textron in 1992. In March 2014, Cessna stopped operating as a subsidiary company and joined Beechcraft and Hawker as one of the three distinct brands produced by Textron Aviation.

Cost

A Cessna Citation M2 can cost between $4.2 million and $5.1 million (USD). A Citation M2 Gen2 costs from $5.85 million.
